This film will be studied for a long time. The rare treat that is both enjoyable to watch and feels historic in the moment of viewing. Production notes aside, Greta Gerwig has cemented her place in history with this movie, so aware of its demographic that it’s able to make a genre all its own while also being diligent about even the most minute detail in its story and design. Saccharine and heartbreaking, it pushes past camp to build community live with its audience. Rather than stating in-jokes, it invites the audience to create them in real-time. Above it all, Margot Robbie demonstrates again that she very well may be the actor of her generation. And somehow, in the end, I deeply crave to be in the Mojo Dojo Casa House with Ryan and Simu.
