The hype machine got to this one and I guess that’s okay. In many ways, how I feel about this is aligned with my shock at seeing the rating attached to the trailer. It doesn’t feel like the stakes were ever really that high and if we just wanted campy Catholic aesthetics, then I think those could have been pushed further. For all the heavy hitters in this film, it feels like they never stepped into the ring. And the central conceit of the film was delivered in such a heavy-handed manner and too late into the narrative. In the end, I didn’t care.
