Emily Blunt is putting in work, but it doesn’t make up for the general chaos of this film. On the one hand, it’s a very Spielberg film, and I love it for that—it almost gives Jurassic Park, but aliens. That said, I can’t help but feel that it’s actually several films mashed together without any real cohesion. I love that were dropped right into the action, but that never pays off. How did we get so far in with these stakes? Why is Colin Firth playing such a cartoonish character? The news broadcast sequence was the most interesting thing that happened.
