Annette Bening and Jodie Foster chewed! Some of my favorite scenes were the psychedelic ones during the swim attempts. However, I think the tone of the flashbacks were not appropriately fit with the cinematography of the rest of the film; the heaviness was not appropriately squared with the lightness, so where contrast was meant to be provided seemed instead like poor aesthetic mix. The story of friendship between Diana and Bonnie is maybe the most compelling. When Bonnie mentions they’ve been friends since they were “like 30,” it gave so much more dimension to the narrative elements on self-actualization. And the village it takes to make it possible for just one.
