I love a slow burn, but I think the season finale narrowly missed a meaningful payoff. Mostly, it feels like the stakes get flattened out. Even though Carol’s and Manousos’s worlds colliding is significant, none of the material facts have really changed for Carol as the protagonist. It’s really just that she decides to remember what she already knows. Aside from this, my current theory is that the show is an allegory for alcoholism and I enjoy watching through that lens. In some ways, this makes raising the stakes more difficult, especially given the literal plot; while I don’t think They would necessarily operate differently, I think seeing them encounter roadblocks, albeit silently, would create some needed tension for us as the audience. This all said, I could probably watch this show explore this world for quite a while.
